Budget statements for schools

Local Authorities (LAs) are required under section 251 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to prepare and publish a budget statement before the beginning of each financial year for that year.

These statements should outline what the LA plans to spend on education services.

  • How much of the whole education budget the LA intends to spend on items outside the schools' budget.
  • How much the LA proposes to retain centrally within the schools' budget for school service.
  • How the funding formula for schools is working to produce budget shares for each school.

The exact formats to be used for this financial reporting are prescribed by the Secretary of State.
