How to prepare a school travel plan

A school travel plan is a tool which looks at a school’s road safety and travel needs.

It involves the whole school community - pupils, teachers, school council, governors and parents and so can become an exciting project that is part of the life and ethos of the school.

To develop your school travel plan, you can the following guidance document and template:

Travel surveys

To complete your school travel plan you will need to undetake a pupil travel survey. Survey data should not be more than 18 months old when your document is prepared.

Staff and parents should be surveyed about their travel habits too.

You may like to adapt these example questionnaires for use in your school:

School travel plans should be submitted to the Slough Borough Council school travel plan advisor for approval: TfS@slough.gov.uk

Travel plan coordinator

It is really important that within each school a travel plan coordinator is appointed to be responsible for the development and also the day-to-day management of the school travel plan. This does not need to be a teacher – it could be a governor or parent who is actively involved with the school. The role of the coordinator is to undertake travel surveys, implement the travel measures and initiatives and review the school travel plan. Slough Borough Council is happy to assist any travel plan coordinators and provide them with the necessary guidance to implement a successful school travel plan.
