October - Word of mouth
This month is all about storytelling, reading out loud, reading together and live literature.
Read aloud
'Reading aloud is the best way to get your children hooked on books for life' - Jacqueline Wilson, Children's Laureate 2005 to 2007.
Sharing books is a wonderful way of building a strong and loving relationship with your child. Even older children and teens enjoy being read to.
Reading to children is a great way to encourage children to enjoy books and research has shown that the earlier they start to enjoy books, the more confident children become, have better communication and listening skills and go on to fare better at school. After all, everything starts with reading.
It’s never too early to start. Reading a story is a great way to talk to babies and babies will be soothed by the sound of your voice.
Visit the
Great Books to Read Aloud for recommended books to read out aoud with children aged from 0 – 11.

Telling stories
Do you like telling stories? Why not get your favourite storybook out and enter the
'telling tales’ competition to find the nation's most enthusiastic amateur storyteller.
Tell us a story about where you live. We need your stories about Slough so that future generations can learn about the history of Slough. To send us your memories of Slough in years gone by or your stories about the area where you live in more recent times, go to
http://www.SloughHistoryOnline.org.uk/ and click on 'Your story' to start writing.
Enjoy listening to stories and poetry
You can listen to
recordings of poets reading their work at the Poetry Archive.
Children under 5 can also join weekly
storytimes held in all our libraries. Slough Library also holds monthly storytimes in Arabic, Hindi, Panjabi, and Urdu.
Everyone can enjoy
talking books. Why not listen to a book on CD or tape while you work or travel?
