How to join the library

Anyone who lives, works or studies in Slough is welcome to join. It’s free and you can join at any age. Even babies can have their own library card!

Join online now!

• Go to our library catalogue, where you can join the library online and fill in your details.

• You will be given a temporary card number and personal identification number (PIN). You can use these straight away to reserve items from the library catalogue

• To start borrowing items or to use our computers you’ll first need to come in to one of our branches to collect your library card.

• You can use your library card number to access our 24 hour reference library from your home computer. This includes online newspapers, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, and websites for finding quality information on art, biography, music, history and current affairs.

Join at your local library

• You can join at any branch of Slough Libraries (Britwell, Cippenham, Langley or Slough) and also at the satellite libraries (Chalvey, Colnbrook and Wexham).
• If you don't have any ID with you when you visit us, you can still sign up straight away. All we ask is that if possible you bring one identity document when you next visit us, such as a bank card, passport, driving licence, medical card, utility bill, or bank statement.
• Children aged over 8 years can join without a parent, guardian or carer being present.
• Children under 8 years need a parent, adult guardian (grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.), or carer to be with them when they join.

Returning and renewing your borrowed items

•Items may be returned to any branch of Slough Libraries.

•You can renew items to keep them for longer if nobody else has requested them.

•There is a charge for items returned late. Renewing will help avoid overdue charges. (You can now receive email alerts to remind you when you have overdue items. Find out how to sign up to email alerts.)

•If you wish to renew audio-visual items, you will be charged the standard rate for borrowing audio-visual items.

•Renew at any Slough library, or renew by telephone or online. You can renew books a maximum of four times by telephone or online before you will need to bring them in and return them after which you can immediately reissue the, provided no-one else has requested them.

Renew an item NOW on the library catalogue

• You need your library card and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to renew items. Not got a PIN? Just ask a member of staff for one.
• Go to the online library catalogue, click on 'Login' under 'My Account' and enter your details.
• Click on 'Current loans', then select (tick the box) for each loan you want to renew and then click on 'Renew selections'.
• Please note that you will not be able to renew items if :
• • You have already renewed them online or by phone 4 times already
    OR
  • They have been requested by others
    OR
  • You owe £10 or more.

Reserving items

•You can reserve lending books, audio books, CDs, Videos, DVDs & CD-Roms, but not items for library use only.

•There is a charge for reserving adult items, and also children’s videos, DVDs and console games. See list of charges. (You will not be able to reserve items if you owe £10 or more.)

•You can now receive email alerts to tell you when you have reserved items waiting for collection. Find out how to sign up to email alerts.

•If you can’t find the book you’re looking for on the library catalogue, you can request it in person or online via interlibrary loan. We are sorry we are unable to take requests for DVDs or CDs not in stock.
