'The Red Haired Woman' by Orhan Pamuk
This is the story of a master well digger and his apprentice in pre modern Istanbul, and a tale about fathers and sons. The modernisation of the rural outskirts Istanbul is offset by ancient myths suffusing the text; Sophocles' 'Oedipus' and 'Sohrab and Rustam' are central to the narrative. I had not anticipated a story about digging a well to be so gripping but the ancient art of water divining is mirrored in the introspection of the characters and the incisive political and social commentary. 'Did it seem right that, rather than reaching up toward the gleam of the stars, we had resolved to burrow into the ground on which we slept?' This book was a beautiful introduction to the work of Orhan Pamuk and I am looking forward to reading more from his corpus." Available in print at Britwell, Cippenham & The Curve.
