In local government, overview and scrutiny seeks to achieve greater accountability, efficiency and transparency in decision-making.
In Slough the role of overview and scrutiny is to act as a check and balance on the executive (the cabinet – the part of the council which is responsible for the most of the day to day decisions), and to improve the quality of council decisions and services.
Members of overview and scrutiny and the scrutiny panels will carry out reviews of services, procedures and, where necessary, recommend changes to council policy. This work will be carried out by informal task and finish scrutiny groups.
The work of overview and scrutiny is currently undertaken at regular meetings of the committee and scrutiny panels which currently meet every six weeks.
Specific scrutiny reviews are undertaken by groups of councillors assisted by officers and members of the public.
