Slough leads the way in many exciting initiatives and is developing as a regional hub. But it also has a history stretching back almost a thousand years to Saxon times.
A 29-acre site in the centre of town, soon to become the ‘Heart of Slough’ development, is planned around the William Street roundabout area.
It will provide a new focus for cultural activity in Slough and the southern region. The vision is to create a set of world-class buildings, establishing a cultural quarter for creative media, information and communications industries from Europe.
The project will include a mix of commercial buildings, housing and community buildings and space, and will bring together in one location public performance spaces, a digital library, 21st Century interactive museum and an enterprise hub for small, local creative industries.
The initiative is unique in that it does not focus solely on the physical regeneration of the centre of Slough, but also develops, in parallel, the local communities helping to grow local creative talent.
Since the First World War, Slough has attracted people and businesses from all over the world.
The Slough Trading Estate was established in 1920 and created numerous jobs. As more businesses established themselves at the Trading Estate, Slough’s economy boomed.
It was in the 1920s and 1930s that the town began to evolve into the lively and vibrant borough that it is today.
Since the 1960s Slough's employment opportunities and location have encouraged a steady stream of people from other countries or regions to settle in the town, and the population has now reached around 120,000 people.
