Residents can delve into their very own story by tracing their family tree at Slough Library’s open day on Wednesday, August 13.
Once a month, from August to November, library staff will host drop-in sessions with the help of experts from the Berkshire Family History Society.
Residents can use the resources of Ancestry Library, an online information site with a wealth of information, to track down relatives and explore their family history.
The Ancestry Library site contains basic programmes to help start a family tree, including births, marriages and death indexes, and the UK census between 1841 and 1901.
Other resources are also available, such as medical records from the First World War, electoral registers and past editions of local newspapers.
The library’s IT centre will open for the history sessions from 2pm to 5pm on the following dates, booking is not necessary:
Tony Pilmer, local studies librarian for Slough Borough Council, said: “We’re pleased to be able to offer more family sessions for residents.
“Our first history sessions were extremely popular, and people can now come back to find out even more about their past.
“It’s great to have the support of the Berkshire Family History Society. Their expertise and advice will not only help get people started, but also help to resolve the problems people come across when researching a family tree.”
Cllr Shafiq Chaudhry, commissioner for community and leisure, said: “Tracing family history is extremely popular at the moment, and Slough residents are lucky to have such great resources on their doorstep.
“This is a fantastic opportunity and I hope people will go along to one of the drop-in sessions and learn about their history.”
Ancestry Library is also available free of charge for library members at any of Slough’s libraries. For more information, please call Tony Pilmer on 01753 787511.
