Slough Borough Council is starting a borough wide initiative called Slough Warmer Homes to promote home insulation, and is teaming up with British Gas to offer a scheme which will give home owners in Slough a £50 council tax rebate.
Depending on the size of your house, you will pay a subsidised rate of between £175 and £275 to British Gas for cavity wall insulation and then £50 will be credited to your council tax account (British Gas is subsidising the scheme).
Householders who receive certain income or disability benefits could be eligible for insulation for free, in which case they will not qualify for the £50 council tax rebate.
Heat loss through walls and lofts could be adding as much as an extra £250 each year on household fuel bills. Each badly insulated house is producing two tonnes of carbon dioxide every year which contributes to global warming and climate change.
The council has also started a programme to insulate the cavities of all of the council’s properties built between 1950 and 1976 right across the borough.
Three teams of contractors are starting to contact council tenants to arrange surveys starting in Britwell, Chalvey, Langley, Kedermister and Foxborough wards. The other council wards will follow and it is hoped that work will be completed by the end of the year.
Private landlords can also benefit from the scheme and make their homes warmer for tenants. A Warmfront grant could be given to upgrade heating systems and for making properties more energy efficient. To qualify they must have tenants that are in receipt of certain benefits. Linzi Bagshaw, Slough Borough Council’s energy conservation officer, said: “The council is committed to reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions across the borough, Slough Warmer Homes represents a major step towards both aims.
“All of our residents whether they own or rent their homes are aware of the rising costs of gas and electricity and the need to become more energy efficient to offset these additional costs.
“The council wants to provide support and information to help conserve energy and protect our environment and this is just the first step.
To sign up for the Slough Warmer Homes scheme, homeowners should call 0845 971 7731 quoting reference CTSL. Lines are open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.
You will be given an estimate over the telephone of how much is it likely to cost based on the size and type of property. An accurate quote will only be provided after a free no obligation survey of your property.
