The Department for Education and Skills has approved funding for a Muslim School in Slough.
In a letter to Slough Borough Council’s director for education and children’s services, Janet Tomlinson, Minister of State for Schools, Jacqui Smith MP said: “I am minded to agree that capital funding will be made available to support the proposal.”
Now funding has been agreed, the proposals will now have to come before Slough’s School Organisation Committee for final approval.
The Muslim School could then take shape on the Lea Infant and Junior School site, with the first intake of pupils in 2008 at the earliest.
Janet Tomlinson, director of education and children’s services, said: “We are delighted that we have passed this first stage of approval for a Muslim school in Slough. My team of officers have worked hard with the promoters – Slough Islamic Schools Project – to make sure that the bid was viable and will deliver high standards of education for Slough’s children who could attend the school.”
Cllr David Munkley, commissioner for education and children’s services, said: “We are pleased the bid was successful and that the project can now move forward to the next stage.”
