Three months to go to new environmental services contract

There is just three months to go until Slough Borough Council takes back its environmental services.

From 1 December 2017, environmental services will no longer be a contracted service, but will be brought back in-house; run directly by the council with a directly-employed workforce.

The service includes:

  • bin collections – refuse, recycling and garden waste
  • Chalvey waste and recycling centre – including the commercial weighbridge
  • street cleaning – including litter picking, fly-tip removal, mechanical sweeping
  • grounds maintenance – grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, flower beds
  • highway maintenance – pothole repairs, pavement repairs

Councillor Fiza Matloob, commissioner for highways and transport, said: “This will be the first time the environmental services workers will be directly employed by the council for more than 15 years.

“By bringing environmental services back in house we have greater control over the operations, the priorities and will be able to be more responsive to the needs of residents.”

The council has also just released images of the livery for the vehicles making up the new fleet – which includes the town’s crest.

Councillor Matloob, added: “The crest represents the whole of Slough in a way no other icon can and we are proud to use it for the livery of the new fleet for the new in-house service.”
