If you want to keep fit, be out in the open air, grow your own food and get to meet people with similar interests - allotments are for you.
Slough has more than 900 plots on 13 allotment sites throughout the borough. Plots are available to all borough residents. The plots are economically priced and concessions are available for people aged 60 or over, registered unemployed and the early retired. A five pole plot (126.5 sq.meters) costs around £20 per year.
Some allotment sites have a trading hut. You can purchase seeds and fertilisers and other items for your plot. There are also plenty of experienced allotment holders to help with advice and assistance. It is a close community with people of all ages and backgrounds working together. You can also enter an annual competition with prizes with winners invited to the Slough in Bloom Awards. You can choose what you want to grow and have fun experimenting with a new type of crop each season. There are plenty of variations for you to try out. Cultivating an allotment is a great way of getting out in the fresh air and keeping fit and active (but don’t overdo it at first).
The pleasure gained from growing your own produce can be enormous. Your plot can provide fresh vegetables all year round at a fraction of shop prices. They taste better too! You also know exactly which chemicals have been used, or you can grow organic crops if you wish.
Books on growing fruit and vegetables are available in Slough Libraries. They are organised in easy to find subject categories.
If you would like more information about any of the sites listed please telephone on 01753 875574 or send an email to Allotments@Slough.gov.uk
