The highways engineering team look after the existing roads, including bridges and street lights in the borough, keeping them safe for everyone to use.
We also look after the adoption of new roads, deal with public rights of way, supervise developers working on roads and manage street naming and numbering.

All roads in the borough are inspected at least once a year and many are inspected more frequently.
Because of the gap between inspections we rely upon local people to report defects they spot so as we can have them repaired.
To find out when your road is next due to be inspected telephone 01753 875635 or e-mail highways@slough.gov.uk.
We deal with faults relating to the roads, pavements, street lights, signs, roadworks, traffic lights, road markings and road drains.
To report a fault:
Lots of firms are given permission to work on the road, particularly those supplying services such as telephone, water, gas, or electricity. All these firms are obliged to display some form of identification saying who they are and giving a contact telephone number. If you cannot identify them call us and we will find out who they are and if they are allowed to be working there
You can apply to the council for the installation of a dropped kerb that will let you drive over the pavement onto your property. The easiest way to apply is by completing our onscreen form which asks you all the information we need to know:
However you can also give us this information by calling 01753 875635 or e-mailing highways@slough.gov.uk.
Someone will take your details and an inspector will visit the site. There are some sites where we cannot install a dropped kerb, for safety or amenity reasons. We will let you know the outcome of your request as soon as we can. The cost is usually approximately £680. This covers the cost of the council’s contractor strengthening the pavement and installing lowered kerbs as well as a small administrative charge.
Please note that if you do not have a dropped kerb installed by the council and you drive across the pavement you are committing an offence and the council may take action against you.
In Slough we issue licenses to skip hire companies to allow them to put skips on the road. We do this to make sure that the company has the correct insurance and is aware of their responsibilities to put the skip in safe position, not damage the road when moving the skip and keep the skip lit at night. It is your responsibility to ensure that the skip company is registered with us. You can check this by ringing 01753 875635 or e-mailing highways@slough.gov.uk.
Telephone 01753 875635 or e-mail highways@slough.gov.uk. If it is a blocked or broken road drain we will unblock it or fix it. Most of Slough has a water table very close to the surface and this makes it difficult for heavy rain falls to drain away in a reasonable time. In these cases, we will do our utmost to stop it causing damage.
Usually, if you are the owner or occupier of land which has any hedges or trees overhanging pavements or roads, then it’s your responsibility to cut them back.
You should ensure that there are no obstructions to the highway, which includes the road, footpath and verge. Hedges should be cut back to the boundary or vertically above the rear of the footpath for a clear height of 2.2 metres. Trees should be cut back to at least 50 cm behind the kerbline to a clear height of 5.2 metres above minor roads and 6.6 metres on main roads.
The council is responsible only for trees and hedges on land that has been officially adopted or purchased for highway improvements.
Where the overhanging is seen to be causing a nuisance to road users we will attempt to make contact with the person responsible and inform them of their duty to remove it. If the landowner does not take action within a reasonable time we may carry out the work and recover the costs from the landowner. This process can take as long as six months to complete.
Each year we carry out a series of special inspections of a proportion of the roads and pavements in Slough. Based upon these, we draw up a list of roads that need resurfacing in order of technical merit. A lot of factors determine the priority of a road on the list and include the state of the road’s surface, whether the road is actually failing structurally, the road classification, proximity of schools, hospitals or other vulnerable users.
Each year we carry out a programme of resurfacing works. In 2004/05 we will resurface approximately 7km of road in total. At that rate we will resurface all roads in the borough once every 43 years.
