Here's a brief account of what legally must take place for a marriage to be valid. The basic marriage ceremony can be personalised in many ways. Ideas on how to personalise your marriage ceremony.
A minimum of six people are required – the bride and groom, two witnesses that they provide, the superintendent registrar and the registrar. In the Bradford Room, The Centre, we have a large ceremonies room and can take up to 70 guests. We cannot allow more than this number as we have to follow health and safety and fire regulations.
On the day, the registrar will interview you privately either together or separately to check that the information given at the time of the notice has not changed so that the correct details can be recorded. Details such as age, occupation and address may well have changed if there has been a long time between giving notice and getting married. The registrar will also check your father's details if these are going to be recorded in the entry. The registrar will also take the fee on the day if this has not been paid in advance, sort out your rings and your witnesses.
The superintendent registrar will then conduct the ceremony, making a short introduction and then asking the bride and groom in turn to make the declaration that they are free to marry, and the contracting words that will make them husband and wife.
If necessary the words for the declaration and contracting words can be repeated in another language – we have around a dozen different language translations and are adding to them all the time.
The marriage register is then completed and signed by the bride and groom, the two witnesses and the two registration officers and the marriage certificate is presented.
