Disability is defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 as "a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on an individual's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities".
An individual with a disability may experience a number of disadvantages in the workplace. For example, company policies may be discriminatory, important information may not be available in the right format or buildings may not be adapted to suit all employees.
Recent changes in employment laws have strengthened the rights of people with disabilities. Policies require equal rights and equal treatment for people with disabilities.
