The new Penn Wood School opened in February 2007 on the site of the old school which was built in 1937.
Children at Penn Wood School were fully involved in the building of their new school, from the design stage through to construction.
Included in the final school building is the ‘tree of life’ which will was unveiled in a special ceremony.
The tree of life is the school emblem and it reflects the ethos of the school which is about creative and personalised learning and potential for growth within all learners.
It is planted in the middle of a central courtyard that’s used for outdoor assemblies and drama productions.
The striking and innovative circular design of the new building means that every child can see the tree from his or her classroom window.
Jane Girle, headteacher of Penn Wood School, said: “Seeing the new school open after four years of hard work was very exciting for all our children, staff, parents and governors.
“The children have been heavily involved in the building of the new school and have been working on whole school projects such as ‘building for the future’.
“I am delighted that we were able to include the ‘tree of life’ in the design of the new school as it will be a lasting reminder to pupils of what the school stands for and has meaning around the world.
“I would like to thank the neighbours and friends of the school who live in the area for their patience during the construction of the new school.”
