Drug driving

Driving under the influence of drugs is just as dangerous as driving whilst drunk and it is also against the law.

Drugs affect people's minds and bodies in a variety of ways, meaning people aren't able to drive safely. The effects can last for hours or even days.

How drugs can affect driving:

• slower reaction times
• poor concentration
• sleepiness
• over confidence
• impaired coordination
• hallucinations
• blurred vision
• dizziness
• aggression

If convicted of drug driving the cost may include:

• fines of up to £5,000
• loss of driving licence
• being barred from hiring a car
• refusal of visa and entry to certain countries
• increase in insurance costs
• being barred from certain jobs and professions
• up to six months in prison
