School Catering

Thanks to a Government grant given to Slough Borough Council to improve the quality of food and drink in the town, a working group made up of staff from Slough Borough Council, local primary and secondary schools, Berkshire Healthy Schools Programme and Berkshire East Primary Care Trust was formed. 

This group, schools and school catering providers have been actively addressing the issue of healthy eating and school meals over the past five years.

The Government funding will assist schools in meeting new school food standards which are being implemented over the next three years. 

Priorities for the group have been:

• To offer water coolers to all LEA schools
• Training and seminars for schools on the new school food and nutritional standards
• The production of a brochure giving healthy eating advice and tips for parents of primary school children.
• The recruitment of a part time School Food Advisor to assist schools with the new school food standards, provide training, develop food policy and promote good practice across Slough.
• Grants for schools to improve their dining room environment
• The offer of free cookery lessons with a professional chef to all LEA schools
• The development of healthy eating resources for all secondary school children
• Funding for packed lunch sessions with children and parents with school nurse
