Government standards

In May 2006, the Government introduced new standards for school food. These are in three parts to be phased in by September 2009. Together they cover all food sold or served in schools: breakfast, lunch and after-school meals, tuck shops, vending, mid-morning break and after-school clubs.

The new standards and timetable for meeting them

Interim food based standards for school lunches - All schools from September 2006
Food based standards for school food other than lunch - All schools by September 2007
Nutrient based standards and new food based standards (i.e. not interim) for school lunches - Primary schools by September 2008, Secondary schools by September 2009

From September 2007, there are those food-based standards that apply at lunchtime, and those that apply to all foods served throughout the school day (e.g. breakfast clubs, tuck shops, vending, break time and after school clubs).
