Caring for someone else's child where the child has a disability is part of the Home from Home – Short Break Scheme.
This could either be for:
The children who use this scheme usually live at home with their parents, and so carers will work in partnership with them.
Home from Home is a service for children aged 0-17 years. The children have physical and/or learning disabilities, and some have sensory problems, such as hearing and visual impairments.
You don't need experience of children with disabilities to become a Home from Home carer, though some experience with children would be beneficial. We are really after carers who:
Patience, energy and sense of fun helps too.
Most children who use this scheme attend special schools, and may not get the chance to make new friend with children out of school. Home from Home offers children to experience new activities, and to interact and form relationships with their carers.
For the child's parents, Home from Home gives them the chance to spend time with their other children or to simply recharge their batteries.
As a Home from Home carer you will not be left to work alone. We offer ongoing support to all our carers; regular visits, training and social events.
As a Home from Home carer you will be classed as a volunteer but will receive a small expense payment each time you spend time with the child you care for. We will also lend you equipment to provide a safe environment to care for any children from the scheme, such as a stair gate or a car seat.
More details on short breaks can be found at the Short Breaks Network website or please contact the Family Placement Service on 0800 073 0291 or email us at familyplacement@slough.gov.uk.
