What is Supported Lodgings?
Supported Lodgings is an accommodation scheme for young people aged 16 plus who are unable to live at home, but are not yet ready to live independently. These placements are seen as a stepping stone, they aim to provide young people with practical and emotional assistance, whilst in the safety and security of a family environment.
What kind of young people need Supported Lodgings?
There is no typical sort of young person; they come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Some have had challenging life experiences, which make it difficult to move easily to independence.
Who can become a Supported Lodgings Carer?
We want to attract carers from different racial and cultural backgrounds, to provide supported lodgings with people who reflect our community as a whole. You could be:
Do I need any specific skills to become a Carer?
You would need to have an interest in helping young people, and some previous experience of raising your own children or working with other young people. Ultimately we are looking for carers who are willing to help young people reach their full potential, and encourage self-confidence to help them develop a positive identity. We would offer training and support to develop any additional skills you may need to be a successful carer.
What am I expected to provide?
You will need to be able to offer a spare room, provide a key to your home, meals, access to a bathroom, kitchen and laundry facilities.
Are there any age requirements to become a Carer?
We need carers to be over 21 years but there is no upper age limit, as long you are fit and healthy.
Does it matter where I live?
We require carers to live in or close to Slough.
What if I smoke?
We would prefer that you don’t smoke, but if you do then we would expect that you would try to discourage a young person from smoking and not allow anyone under the age of 18 to smoke in your house.
What if I have health concerns?
All enquiries are considered on an individual basis. However, as long as your health concerns are not life threatening and our medical advisor considers that they will not impact on your capacity to be an effective supported lodgings carer, then we will be happy to consider your application.
What support can I expect as a Carer?
You will receive regular visits and support from the family placement team. The young person will have his or her own allocated social worker. They will be able to help you sort out any difficulties that may arise. You will also be offered training, and will be invited to attend family placement support groups and social events. In addition we offer an out of hour’s advice and consultation service.
Will I get paid for being a Carer?
You will be paid an allowance to meet the costs of providing a placement and the young person will also contribute a small amount towards the cost of their accommodation. We advise you to contact the Family Placement Service for up-to-date information about financial support available.
