Recycling for your business

As recycling becomes a bigger part of our day to day lives at home, more people are looking at recycling and reducing waste in the workplace.

Why can't the council recycling team offer recycling services to local businesses?

Slough Borough Council is only able to provide recycling services to householders in the borough. However, the council would like to encourage all businesses to recycle as much as possible through a private provider. Waste produced by commercial or industrial premises is deemed trade waste. Each company has the freedom to choose their own waste disposal provider. Therefore companies also have responsibility for organising for their own waste to be recycled. There are a number of national and local organisations who can provide excellent advice to your organisation about waste minimisation and recycling.

Where can I find an organisation who will collect recyclables from my business?

Visit the Yellow Pages website, which will list all your local waste disposal and recycling services, or alternatively the "waste and recycling" section.

CEAC also have a directory of local organisations providing recycling services.

Where can I get additional help and advice related to reducing and recycling resources in my business?

Slough Business Environment Club is led by local businesses who aim to improve their business performance by reducing their impact on the environment.

They offer a range of free seminars and events for their members throughout the year. Topics have included information about energy saving, minimising waste, minimising water usage, initiating recycling and complying with environmental legislation.

Envirowise is a national government funded programme offering businesses free, independent, advice on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.

There are over 150 different online guides to help with all aspects of "greening" your business. The Envirowise Helpline 0800 585794 will answer any queries from businesses and give two hours, over the phone consulting on specific questions.

Egeneration is the local one-stop shop for green business advice in the South East. It includes a guide to green training events aimed at small businesses (often free).

Buckingham and Berkshire Sustainable Business Partnerhsip can provide relevant local advice and free visits to small businesses to help you get started with resource efficiency plans.
