Road safety programme

There is an extensive programme which is run across Slough’s schools.

Primary schools

For primary school children pedestrian skills are very important. A variety of walks and talks are available to them. In Year 6, when pupils are about to move to secondary school, it is an ideal time to talk about responsibility and making decisions alone.

Junior Citizen takes place every June. Year 6 pupils attend a local community centre where they spend sessions with different agencies, which include:

• Road Safety
• Fire Brigade
• Trading Standards
• Red Cross

Walk to School Week also takes place in June which encourages walking and this leads to more road skills for the children.

Secondary schools

Secondary schools are offered talks for the sixth formers as they may to start to drive or ride. They are also vulnerable as passengers because they travel in cars with new, inexperienced drivers. Peer pressure, risk taking, alcohol and drug driving are all covered.

In November ‘Safe Drive Safe Alive’ is offered to all secondary schools. This multi agency event is a powerful portrayal of how a serious road crash affects not just those involved but families and friends too. For more information about safe drive, visit their website.
