Learner drivers

Before you can drive on the road you must first get a provisional licence. To apply for this you will need a D1 form which you can apply online through the Directgov website or from the Post Office.

Most people learn to drive with an Approved Driving Instructor. Ask friends or relatives if they can recommend an instructor to you.

Lessons can be supplemented by driving with a parent or friend. Make sure you are insured to drive the vehicle you are learning in.

Whilst driving under supervision you must be accompanied by another person who:

• is over 21 years old
• holds a full licence for the type of vehicle you are driving (e.g. car, automatic or manual)
• held that licence for a minimum of three years

Also you should make sure:

• the car is in a safe and legal condition
• you both meet the required eyesight standards
• the car displays L plates if the learner is driving
