The planning committee approved the master plan on 9 July 2009 for the Heart of Slough project. It's a £450m scheme to revitalise a 29-acre site in the town centre.
The project is being delivered by Slough Borough Council, the Homes and Communities Agency, and Development Securities and will bring:
The Brunel bus station is being replaced with a sleek modern design by Matthew Bedward of Bblur architects.
Another landmark building will be the community complex, which will be the home for the:
The bus station will be completed in early 2011, and the community complex will be completed during 2012. Other parts of the Heart of Slough development will take longer.
The planning committee has also approved detailed plans for a new road layout to replace the existing Brunel roundabout and subways. With interlinked traffic lights that communicate with each other, the new layout promises to improve traffic flow at this busy junction and create safer pedestrian crossing areas.
The removal of the roundabout will also free up wasted space, providing room for more open public spaces such as a plaza area near the church.
The highways work is being funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the national housing and regeneration agency for England, and begins in August 2010.
Development Securities will provide office accommodation to attract new organisations into the town, building on Slough’s reputation as a location of choice for the European Head Quarters of some of Europe’s most famous names.
The project involves the redevelopment and reconfiguration of the existing roundabout at the junction of Wellington Street with William Street to create a crossroad layout at this road junction. Plus the removal of the existing pedestrian subway (underneath Wellington Street), and alterations to the footways of Wellington Street, William Street and High Street West associated with works to enhance the public realm/landscaping within these areas.
The redevelopment of the four quadrant sites adjacent to the roundabout are:
This is to give:
Wellington/William Street/roundabout and approaches to the roundabout, plus the land on the four sites adjoining the roundabout (as listed above), plus High Street West.
