The European Parliament has 626 Members, and represents the 370 million people who live in the 15 Member States of the European Union.
MEPs meet in Brussels and Strasbourg to scrutinise, amend and vote draft legislation, and approve the annual budget of the European Union.
They also debate issues which affect the European Union and draw attention to the problems of their constituents.
Elections take place every five years. The last election was held in 2004. The next European Parliamentary election will be held on Thursday 4 June 2009, some details can be found below.
For the European Parliament, England, Scotland and Wales have been divided into 11 Regions, each electing a different number of Members of the European Parliament.
