When sentenced for a crime, offenders can be given unpaid work.
It is a punishment and also a way the offender can make amends to the community for the harm they have caused – hence the name Community Payback.
Courts can set the community payback sentence at anything between 40 and 300 hours – this depends on the seriousness of the crime and the offenders record.
Community Payback cannot take paid work away from others.

In Slough each year, offenders carry out around 30,000 hours of community payback work under the supervision of Thames Valley Probation.
In January 2009, offenders undertook 2,647 hours of work in the borough.
