The birth or death entry will be held in the office where the birth or death was first registered. If you phone your local register office they should be able to give you the address to write to, and the phone number of that office.
If the marriage was in a register office, or was a long time ago in a church or temple or building which has filled that register, then you may get a copy from the register office for that district.
However, if the marriage in a religious building was more recent, then the register office will not have a deposited register from the church, and then the only local place to get your certificate will be the church or temple etc. Some churches take a long time to fill their registers, and occasionally even marriages from a long time ago will still only be held by the church. In extreme cases, the original register from 1837 in still in current use!
It is possible to get copies of birth, death and marriage certificates from the General Register Office or the Family Records Centre.
