Equalities Unit: Our role and purpose

The town's economic, social and cultural wellbeing requires contributions from all of the borough's people. The equalities unit seeks to promote equal opportunity, equal access in both employment and service delivery.

To achieve this we:

Provide strategic focus and support for developing, monitoring and reviewing equality work in the council
Share good practice in addressing equality issues and improving outcomes
Work in partnership with other institutions, agencies and groups to address equality issues, which cut across different areas
Encourage people who are excluded or discriminated against to get involved and make their voices heard
Influence and encourage and advise departments to address unmet needs
Monitor the work that we do
Celebrate positive achievements

The sixth diversity conferences was held in July 2008. It is to engage the local communities and organisations to discuss the public sector equalities agenda. You can find the report for this conference below.
