Every councillor receives an annual payment for the time they spend on their elected duties.
This includes time spent attending council meetings, meeting with officers and constituents, dealing with constituents’ enquiries and problems and attending political group meetings. The basic allowance also helps cover costs such as using their homes and private telephones for council-related work.
The special responsibility allowance is paid to councillors who fall within the following categories: leader, deputy leader of the council, leaders of the opposition parties, cabinet members and chairs and vice chairs of committees.
Councillors can also claim travelling, subsistence and dependants' carers allowances.
All allowances are subject to National Insurance and income tax deductions where appropriate.
