The schedule below shows the various allowances paid to councillors between 1 April 2009 to 31 March 2010.
All allowances are subject to National Insurance and income tax deductions where appropriate.
Under the Members’ Allowances Scheme each councillor receives an annual basic allowance which is paid on a proportionate basis according to the actual number of days the Member has served.
This allowance is paid in recognition of the time councillors spend on their duties as elected representatives. This includes such inevitable calls on their time as attending:
The allowance is also intended to help cover costs such as the use of their home and private telephones for which no other provision is made.
The Special Responsibility Allowance is paid to Members who have special responsibilities which fall within the following categories:
Members can also claim travel, subsistence and dependants’ carers’ allowances to cover expenses incurred in carrying out approved duties.
The Council’s Independent Remuneration Panel has recently completed a comprehensive review of the Members’ Allowances Scheme. A copy of its report which sets out its findings and recommendations was considered by full council on 27 July 2010. The council approved the implementation of the Panel’s recommendations with effect from 1 October.
