Tenancy Issues

Your tenancy agreement is a legal contract. It describes the rights and responsibilities of the:

• council
• you, the tenant

Sole tenant

You are the sole tenant if you are the only one who signed the tenancy agreement. You are responsible for:

• paying the rent
• keeping to the terms of the agreement

Joint tenants

If 2 or more of you signed the tenancy agreement, you are joint tenants. This means each one of you

• has the same rights
• are equally responsible to make sure you meet all the terms of the tenancy responsibilities

You are a secure tenant as long as this is your only home. You must live here for most of the time.
As a secure tenant, you can keep your home as long as you want, unless there is a legal reason why the council wants it back, such as a 'ground for possession' in the Housing Act.

A court has to agree with the council’s request to evict you or move you to another home.
