What if I have problems paying the rent?
If you have problems with paying the rent you can:
We will then do all we can to help you if you are having genuine difficulties, i.e. make sure you are getting all the benefits you are entitled to and advise you of other agencies who may be able to help you, such as the debt and welfare rights unit, REAP resettlement agency, citizens advice bureau etc…
They can provide confidential benefit and assessment advice and debt counselling.
We can also discuss with you the best way to clear your debt or follow the arrears procedure if you do not reach an agreement with us or your arrears continue to increase.
To enable us to help you clear any rent arrears you will need to complete a financial circumstances declaration form. You can view a copy of this form here and download if you wish.
Joint tenants are each responsible for all the rent and for any rent arrears.
The council can recover all rent arrears owed for your home from any individual joint tenant. So two joint tenants may live in a home where the overall rent is £60 a week. One of them may pay their £30 share every week. But if the second person gets into rent debt and leaves the home owing £500, the first tenant can still be held responsible for their debt. So make sure you are happy to share this responsibility before you become a joint tenant.
