The Council is the operating authority for various streams and watercourses that flow through the borough. It has powers, but is not obliged, to carry out flood defence works. The landowners are usually responsible for the maintenance of any stream that flows through or adjacent to their land.
Following a series of flooding incidents across the country a few years ago, the government decided that, amongst other things, local councils should prepare a public policy statement which outlined their approach to flood defence in their area.
The Borough Council’s Policy Statement on flood defence includes an assessment of flooding risk together with plans for reducing or managing that risk. It also aims to discourage inappropriate development in areas at risk of flooding.
