How can my food business get a food safety award?
There are 4 levels of award – 1, 2, 3 and 4 Star. To obtain an award, your food business premises must be operated above the minimum legal requirements.
Obtaining an award requires your premises to be assessed by a food safety officer from Slough Borough Council who will judge your premises and operation against fixed criteria, including:
An award remains valid until the next routine inspection when it will be reassessed to determine whether the business retains, upgrades, or has the award withdrawn. Any fall in standards found as a result of a visit between routine inspections may also result in withdrawal of an award. An information pack is available which provides more details of the Award Scheme.
If you need further information phone the Duty Officer (Food H&S) in the Commercial Services Team (Public Protection Services, Green & Built Environment Directorate) on 01753 875255 or email foodandsafety@slough.gov.uk.
What food safety training courses are available in Slough?
Slough Council’s Food Safety Team organise ‘Food Safety Management Training’ courses for local food business managers which provides structured and practical advice on preparing HACCP documentation and process charts. We also run the level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering training course on a monthly basis. This course is designed for ALL food handlers, managers and proprietors of food catering businesses, and aims to give candidates a fundamental knowledge of the basic principals of food hygiene. This course replaces the previous Basic/Foundation food hygiene certificate. On successfully completing the training and short multiple choice exam, candidates are awarded a nationally recognised CIEH level 2 award certificate in food safety in catering.
What are the council doing to encourage people to stop smoking in food premises and other workplaces?
Slough Borough Council, in partnership with other agencies, including Slough Primary Care Trust (PCT), has formed the ‘Smoke Free Berkshire Alliance’.
The Alliance is a group set up with the aim of reducing the ill-health and premature death caused every day by smoking tobacco in Berkshire. The group has the remit of implementing the government’s six strand action plan for reducing smoking prevalence by following the Government Office for the South East regional strategy.
The current priority area for work is taking action against smoking in private work and public places. The Alliance has created a website which includes a guide for the public listing 100% smoke-free establishments and a toolkit for managers and landlords of premises that wish to develop and implement smoke free premises. Hard copies of both documents can be requested free of charge by emailing the alliance co-ordinator russell.carter@berkshire.nhs.uk.
