What are the age restrictions for the goods I sell in my shop?
Minimum age for restricted products
Do not rely on looks alone. If there is the slightest doubt you should ask, not make assumptions. Do not sell to a child who tells you that the products are for an adult, parents or even if the child has a letter from their parents.
Ask for proof of age where you are in any doubt - driving licence, birth certificate, or even better something with a photo (proof of age scheme card etc.). Exercise your right not to sell where you have any suspicion that the person is under age including challenging the age of any young person.
Make sure your staff are just as careful - if they sell the goods you too can be prosecuted. If in doubt, do not sell!
If you are concerned that a retailer is selling products below the age limit, then contact trading standards.
