How do I get a student loan?
You can get a student loan by completing an application form for student support (form PN1) which can be obtained from the Student Support Section, Children and Education, Slough Borough Council, Town Hall, Bath Road, Slough, Berkshire, SL1 3UQ.
You can also apply online at the Student Finance Direct website. Please note that emailed applications cannot be accepted as signatures are essential.
How much will I have to pay towards my school fees?
Students from households with a residual income of less than £22,010 don't pay any fees. Student from households with a residual income of between £22,010 and £32,744 pay part of their fees. Students from households with a residual income of £32,745 or more pay the full £1175 fee.
How quickly do I have to repay my student loan?
You will not have to start repaying your loan until the April after you have finished or left your course. The amount you repay will be linked to your income. You will not have to make any repayments while your income is under £15,000.
How will I pay my school fees?
Help towards fees is based on assessing your household income. This means that you may have to contribute to the costs.

When will I get my student loan?
In 2005/2006 most students will receive their first loan instalment straight into their bank account after they have enrolled for their courses. However, their college must have confirmed to the SLC that they are attending the relevant course.
When can I apply for financial help for going to university?
You can get hold of an application form by contacting your LEA or by going on line. Forma are available from the March before your course begins if you are an Autumn term starter.
What if I change course or university/college?
You need to inform the Student Support team if you are thinking of changing your course to discuss your options.
What happens with my student loan if I don't get a job after leaving my course or if I lose my job?
You will not have to make repayments while your income is below the threshold of £15,000. If for any reason your income falls below that amount, you will not have to make repayments until your income rises above it.
What extra help is available with school fees?
The Access to Learning Fund is available through your college and provides help for students on low income who may need extra financial support for the course and to stay in higher education. The college will tell you what information you need to provide and how they will assess your application.
I want to study part time. What help is available for me?
Part-time students on courses in England and Wales that are 50% or more of an equivalent full-time course can apply for support towards their fee and course costs.
Entitlement will depend on your income or that of your husband, wife or partner. If for example, you are a single student you will qualify for full support if your income is less than £14,970.
