What happens at the Citizenship Ceremony?
At the ceremony, you will be welcomed into the community, asked to take the Oath (or Affirmation) of Allegiance and take the Pledge of Loyalty.
You will also be presented with your naturalisation certificate, you will receive a small gift from the council, and the National Anthem will be played.
Can I attend an individual Citizenship Ceremony?
Yes, anybody can request an individual ceremony at an additional cost.
Can I be transferred to an earlier date for my Citizenship Ceremony in case of cancellations?
Yes you can, if one becomes available. Your name will be put on the waiting list and you will be informed if an earlier date becomes available.
Can I transfer my Citizenship Ceremony to another Council?
Yes, it is your choice where you attend, but attending at another Council may well delay the process as it will have to be referred to the Home Office.
Do I have to attend the Citizenship Ceremony?
Yes you do. If you do not attend you will not be issued with your certificate and it will be returned to the Home Office.
There is also a 3 month time limit for attending at a ceremony.
Do I have to shake the Mayor's hand at the Citizenship Ceremony?
No, it is your choice if you want to shake hands with the Mayor or any other signatory.How do I apply for British Citizenship?
Applications are made to the Home Office.
How long does the Citizenship Ceremony take?
The ceremony lasts between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the number of people attending.
How many guests can I bring to the Citizenship Ceremony?
Each adult applicant is allowed to bring two guests on the day of the ceremony.
How often do Citizenship Ceremonies take place?
Citizenship ceremonies are normally held every two weeks.
What is the difference between an Oath of Allegiance and Affirmation for the Citizenship Ceremony?
The Oath of Allegiance is based on religious principles and the Affirmation is not.
What is the dress code for the Citizenship Ceremony?
It is up to you how you want to appear in the commemorative photograph.
When do I need to attend the Citizenship Ceremony?
Please wait until you receive a letter from us which will give details of the dates the ceremony has been scheduled for.

When will I get the Citizenship Certificate?
You will get a letter from the Home Office informing you that you have been granted citizenship and a contact number to ring at the council.
The certificate will be issued at the ceremony by the Mayor or Deputy Mayor.
Where is the Citizenship Ceremony held?
The ceremony is held in the Town Hall, Bath Road.
