Can I check if a path is a public right of way?
You can do this by checking maps such as the Ordnance Survey series. The council holds the Definitive Map of the Borough, that, together with the Definitive Statements for each route, are the legal record of the public's rights along them. This is available in hard copy for viewing by contacting the highways team.
Can I purchase maps showing public rights of way and footpaths?
At present there are no maps showing public rights of way for purchase. For information on records of rights of way write to the Head of Planning. For all other enquires concerning paths contact network services.
What are public rights of way?
Public rights of way are the main means of getting out and about into the countryside. They are minor highways, protected in law like all other public roads. There are four types, one of which will change soon:
Note: Although it is illegal to use a motor vehicles on a footpath and bridleways (and restricted byways when they come in) there may be separate landowner or other private rights of access with vehicles.
What is a 'Definitive Map'?
The Definitive Map shows the rights of way within the Borough. This together with the Definitive Statements for each route, forms the legal record of the public's rights along them. This is available in hard copy for viewing by contacting the highways team.
Can I purchase items from the council? (e.g. street lights, benches, road materials)
Slough does not sell items such as street lights or road materials. Contact a builder merchant directly or search using the internet.
Can the council recommend a contractor to do road works (e.g. re-lay a drive)?
Slough cannot endorse any particular contractor to undertake road works. You will need to locate a contractor from the yellow pages or internet.
Someone has blocked the footpath, right of way - can the council deal with it?
Please contact the highways section on 01753 875633 to discuss specific details regarding blocked footpaths and rights of way.
Does the council provide grants to voluntary and community organisations?
Yes the council does provide grants to voluntary and community organisations. There are three types of council corporate grants: Kick Start are small grants from an annual fund.
