When will my child be eligible for nursery or primary school?

In Slough, early years education is available for children who have not yet started school.

By law, children must attend school from the term after their fifth birthday. Many schools in Slough admit children earlier.

Slough Borough Council is committed to providing good early years services for children and part-time places are available for all children the term after their third birthday.

How do I request leave for my child from school?

If you wish to request leave for your child, you will be expected to;

• Complete the school’s ‘Request for Leave of Absence’ form before firm arrangements have been made.
• Discuss in detail with the Head teacher why this leave is unavoidable
• Agree with the Head teacher a clear date for the child to return to school

Can I take my child on holiday during school term time?

Parents do not have an automatic right to withdraw their child from school for a holiday. However:

• In exceptional circumstances Headteachers may grant a single leave of absence ( up to 10 school days) for a child once during their primary education (between 5–11 yrs old) and once in secondary, (11–16 yrs old).
• If the Headteacher does not grant the leave of absence, it will be recorded as unauthorise absence which may automatically trigger a Penalty Notice (see overleaf)
• If additional absence occurs outside the agreed leave dates it will be recorded as unauthorised absence which may trigger a Penalty Notice
• If the return to school is delayed, the Headteacher may remove the child from the roll after a further 10 days. Illness may be an exception to this if it is certified by a doctor.
• If authorisation for the leave has not been requested, the Headteacher may remove the child from the school roll.
