My child wants to get a part time job, what should I do?
The basic rules for children who want to work are: The child must be at least 13 years old, must have a work permit, be fit enough to do the work, it must not affect the childs school work and the school attendance must be good. Will my child be able to get paid employment?
Yes, however there are restrictions on the number of working hours which children between 13 years old and school leaving age can work. See 'What hours can my child work?' below.
What hours can my child work?
The permitted hours for employing young people are shown below.
A work permit must be obtained at least two weeks before you intend the employment to commence. Regular employment checks are carried out by the Attendance Service to ensure the safety and well being of the young person.
School days: up to a maximum of 12 hours per week during term time. This can be either between the end of the school day and 7.00pm up to a maximum of 2 hours, or 1 hour between 7.00 and 8.00am and 1 hour between the end of the school day and 7.00pm.
