We have a joint tenancy and my partner has left the property. How does this affect my tenancy?
This is not automatic. The partner who has left needs to relinquish his or her side of the tenancy by his/her free will in writing to the housing department.
When this is received, certain checks are made by the housing officer before the tenancy is changed from a joint to a sole tenancy. This also means that no further rights of succession will be rewarded. The above is also granted if there is no rent arrears.
If we do not receive written confirmation from the tenant, the remaining tenant would need to go court to obtain a property judgement.
I am moving into a nursing home, what should I do?
You should inform your housing officer immediately on 01753 875491. You will need to give us four weeks' notice before moving out. Rent will be liable up to the end of your tenancy agreement. You should also contact the housing benefit department as you may be liable for the rent.
