What is a direct payment for adults?
A direct payment is a cash payment allowing clients to buy their own support instead of Social Services providing it. The money can be used to employ a personal assistant or to use an agency to provide staff for you. A client can 'mix and match' and have some support provided by Social Services and take some as a direct payment.
How does Direct Payment work?
If you request direct payments, you will be in charge of organising your own care and paying for it. You will receive payment into your account to pay for services. You will need to keep a record to show how you have spent the money, including any invoices and receipts.
How can I apply for direct payments?
Direct payments are arranged by the Community Care Access Team. They can be contacted on 01753 690400.
Do I have to use Direct Payments?
No you don't. You can decide to receive care arranged or provided by social services, you can choose to have Direct Payments, or you can choose to have direct payment for part of the care services and let social services arrange the rest.
How much will I receive by direct payment?
This will depend on your circumstances and the area of care services you are assessed as needing.
What can direct payments be spent on?
Direct Payments must be used to pay for services that meet your assessed social care needs, which would otherwise be arranged or provided by social services.
What would my responsibilities be under the direct payment scheme?
If you receive direct payments you will be expected to sign a contract, set up an account with a bank or building society, organise your services, use the money given to pay for services, assist in the monitoring of your care plan, keep proof of spending, and an agreed set of records for inspection.

Who can get direct payments?
Most people who are assessed as needing a social care service can receive direct payments. This includes people with physical disabilities, sensory impairment, learning disabilities, HIV / AIDS, mental health problems, older people and parents of disabled children.
Are there situations where direct payments cannot be used?
Direct payments cannot be used to pay for permanent residential care or nursing care, purchase equipment or services that are normally provided by the health, housing or education services, or to employ a partner or spouse or relative or anyone who lives with you.
