Who can claim housing benefit?
Anyone who has rental liability can claim although it is dependant on your circumstances. Please ring the housing benefits helpline on 01753 875348.
Where can I get a housing benefit form?
You can collect an application form from the Customer Service Centre or you can telephone 01753 875348/9 and request a form to be sent to you.
How much Housing Benefit can I claim?
This will depend on your circumstances. We advice that private tenants (renting from landlords, agents) should carry out a pre-tenancy determination.
How will my Housing Benefit be paid?
If you are a council tenant, we will pay any Housing benefit you are awarded into your rent account.
If you are not a council tenant and are awarded housing benefit we will pay you by giro cheque or direct to your landlord.
If you are awarded Council Tax Benefit, we will pay this into your Council Tax account.

You can ring the benefits line on 01753 875348 or visit the Customer Service Centre, for assistance in making a housing benefit claim.
When will my housing benefit start?
Generally, it will start on the Monday after the application has been received by us.
I've received a letter from you requesting to see my original documents to support my housing benefit or council tax benefit claim. What do I do?
You can bring your originals into the Customer Service Centre where staff will be able to take photocopies for you.
I have made a claim for housing benefit and I would like to find out the status of the claim, who can I contact?
You can get advice about the progress of your claim by either calling in to the Customer Service Centre and talking to one of the advisers or by telephoning the benefits section on 01753 875348 or 875349.
I have recently arrived in Britain from abroad. Can I claim housing benefit?

I am a student. Can I claim housing benefit?

How is my Housing Benefit worked out?
Benefit payments depend on many factors and are calculated depending on your circumstances. A breakdown of how your benefit was worked out will be sent to you once a decision has been made on your application.
What is a pre-tenancy determination?
This is a way for the council to determine if the rent you are being asked to pay is appropriate for the property. Application forms can be obtained from the Customer Service Centre, and further advice can be obtained from the helpline.
