Going to university?
An application form for student support (form PN1) can be obtained from the Student Support Section, Children and Education, Slough Borough Council, Town Hall, Bath Road, Slough, Berkshire, SL1 3UQ.
You can also aplly onlone for your student loan by visiting the Student Finance Direct's website. Please note that emailed applications cannot be accepted as signatures are essential.

1. Application deadline
So that we may make our assessment in time for you to receive your student support entitlement in time for the start of your course, you should complete and return the form by the date that corresponds with the type of application you will submit:
- 25 April for non income assessed forms
- 23 May for renewal forms
- 27 June for new fully assessed forms
If you complete the form after that date you will still be eligible for support if you meet the criteria but you may not receive payment at the start of your course
2. Where to apply
- You should normally apply to the local education authority where you live (unless you moved to that area for the purpose of attending the course for which you are applying for support)
- If you're not sure which authority you should apply to, or if you have applied to another authority for student support please contact us for advice before completing form PN1
If you have moved or will be moving to Slough from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man or another European Community State for the purpose of attending your course, do not fill in form PN1.
In these circumstances, you should contact the relevant authority named below:
- Scotland: Student awards agency for Scotland
- N . Ireland: Your local education and library board
- Channel Islands: Education departments of Guernsey or Jersey
- Isle of Man: the education department
- Other EC countries: Department for Education and Employment, European Union Student Support, Mowden Hall, Staindrop Road, Darlington, DL3 9BG (Telephone: 01325 460155).
3. What will happen to my application form
Step 1
- You must submit a fully and accurately completed application form and enclose all documents that are requested
- If you are unable to provide any document immediately, please submit your form and indicate that the document will be sent to us later
- In order to calculate your student support entitlement in time for the start of your course, you should complete and return the form by the date stated above in Note 1 - application deadline.
Step 2
- When we receive your application form, your details will be entered onto the student finance direct system and you will be sent an acknowledgment letter
- This letter will tell you your personal student reference number which you should give if you phone or contact us by letter
Step 3
- We will look at your form to see if you are eligible for support
- If you have not answered all the questions or have not sent all the proof we need, we will write to you asking for more information
- We will use the information you have given on your application form to decide whether you are entitled to support
Step 4
- We will calculate the level of support you are entitled to and send you a notification of support letter. This will tell you the amount we will pay towards the cost of your tuition fees and the amount of loan available to you
Step 5
- If you have met the deadlines given above and the details you have given us have not subsequently changed, the first instalment of your student loan will be paid to you, usually direct to your bank account
- If you are applying for disabled students allowance, further guidance will be sent to you advising you of the procedure to follow to be considered for assistance
- Payments for disabled students allowances are not means tested and are in the form of a grant rather than a loan
