The planning system provides the way of controlling how we use land, what we build and where we build it. The council is responsible for making decisions on planning applications for development in Slough.
Planning is for everyone! We would like everyone who lives and works in Slough to have a part to play in shaping the borough and helping to create a sustainable community that is environmentally, socially and culturally healthy.
This section contains information about the planning policy documents that form the Local Development Framework, the local development plan for Slough that is used to guide development across the whole of Slough Borough Council.

More details are available below.
The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 requires the preparation of a portfolio of documents that together will form the Slough Local Development Framework. These documents will collectively set out the policies and guidance to govern the spatial planning of Slough over the next 20 years.
The LDF will gradually replace the Slough Local Plan (adopted March 2004). In September 2007 the Secretary of State confirmed a total of 84 Local Plan policies were saved until replaced by LDF policies or superseded by national and/or regional policy.
It should be noted that the Minerals and Waste Development DPDs will be prepared by the Joint Strategic Planning Unit (JSPU) on behalf of the six Berkshire planning authorities. For more information on the Minerals and Waste Development DPDs please visit the JSPU's website.
The council will also be preparing other documents that comply with the Core Strategy and will provide further guidance on a varety of issues and policy themes.
The Core Strategy (2006-2026) is the overarching strategic policy document in the Local Development Framework. It sets out the key issues to be addressed, and how these will be acheieved through the spatial vision, strategic objectives, spatial strategy and supporting policies that guide the social, economic and environmental issues for development across the Borough. The Core Strategy also includes a framework for implementing and monitoring its policies.
The council adopted the Core Strategy on the 16 December 2008. This means it is now a statutory Development Plan Document (DPD) and should be given full weight in the determination of planning applications.
Background documents to the adoption including the Inspector's Report are available from the link below.
The council are in the process of producing a Site Allocations DPD. This will form part of the LDF and will identify potential sites for: development and redevelopment; local nature conservation; public open space; land for other planning purposes identified within the Core Strategy e.g. areas of comprehensive regeneration.
Additionally the Site Allocations DPD will identify proposed alterations to the boundaries of established land use designations identified in the Slough Local Plan 2004. The site allocations proposals will be shown on the Proposal Map which will be adopted at the same time as the DPD.
Progress on the Site Allocations document was reported to the Planning Committee on the 15 April 2009 and to Cabinet on the 20 April 2009. The Site Allocations DPD was approved for publication by the Council in September 2009. Representations can be made between 6 November-18 December 2009. For more information see the link below to the Site Allocations page.
The House Extensions Supplementary Planning Document has been produced by Slough Borough Council and forms part of the LDF, and principally supports the implementation of Core Strategy Policy 8 (sustainability and the environment).
While the need for house extensions is accepted, large scale extensions can impact both on the street scene and on neighbouring occupiers. The guidelines therefore try and find a balance between allowing house owners to extend their properties with the longer term requirement to protect both the character and appearance of existing houses and their surroundings, and residential amenity for existing and future occupiers.
The House Extensions SPD was approved for adoption on 11 January 2010 by the council's Planning Committee on 15 December 2009. Any person aggrieved by the Residential Extensions Guidelines SPD may apply to the HIgh Court for judicial review of the decision to adopt not later than 22 February 2010.
For details on how to apply for a judicial review visit the Residential Extensions Guidelines SPD, found below.
The revised Local Development Scheme for Slough (2009-2012) was approved by the Secretary of State in June 2009. This sets out:
