The planning system provides the way of controlling how we use land, what we build and where we build it. The council is responsible for making decisions on planning applications for development in Slough.
Planning is for everyone! We would like everyone who lives and works in Slough to have a part to play in shaping the borough and helping to create a sustainable community that is environmentally, socially and culturally healthy.
This section contains information about the planning policy documents that form the Local Development Framework, the local development plan for Slough that is used to guide development across the whole of Slough Borough Council.

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 requires the Council to produce a portfolio of documents that together form the Local Development Framework. These documents collectively set out adopted policies and guidance to govern the spatial planning of Slough over the next 20 years and are used to determine planning applications.
In September 2007 the Secretary of State confirmed a total of 84 Local Plan policies were saved until replaced by LDF policies or superseded by national and/or regional policy. The LDF is gradually replacing Policies in the Slough Local Plan (adopted March 2004), and it a requirement for the Annual Monitoring Report to set out which policies are no longer in use. The 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 AMRs set out eight of these have now been replaced by those in the Core Strategy and Site Allocations DPDs.
Please note: Minerals and Waste Development Plan Documents are being prepared by the Joint Strategic Planning Unit (JSPU) on behalf of the six Berkshire planning authorities. For more information on Minerals and Waste Policies for Slough please visit the JSPU's website.
The council will also be preparing other documents that comply with the Core Strategy and will provide further guidance on a varety of issues and policy themes.
The Core Strategy is the overarching strategic policy document in the Local Development Framework. It sets out the key issues to be addressed, and how these will be acheieved through the spatial vision, strategic objectives, spatial strategy and supporting policies that guide the assessment of applications within the social, economic and environmental priorities for the Borough. The Core Strategy also includes a framework for implementing and monitoring its policies.
The council adopted the Core Strategy on the 16 December 2008. Background information on the production of this DPD including the Inspector's Report and Sustainabilty Appraisal Report are available from the link below.
The Proposals Map is available as a series of A3 adobe acrobat files that can be downloaded from the 'Proposals Map' link below.
The revised proposals map was produced and adopted alongside the Site Allocations DPD and provides an up to date record of the boundaries of established land use designations and Site Allocations across Slough. More information about how it was produced is presented in the 'Proposals Map' document below.
This document was adopted by the Council on the 30th November and now forms part of the LDF. It endorses proposals for 29 sites across the Borough that will help deliver the spatial strategy for Slough set out in the Core Strategy. This includes proposals for regeneration, development, biodiversity, public open space and other planning purposes identified in the Core Strategy.
The site allocations proposals will be shown on the Proposals Map which will was adopted at the same time as the DPD.
Background information on the production of the Site Allocations DPD including the Inspector's report and Sustainability Appraisal Report can be downloaded from the links below.
The Residential Extensions Guidelines SPD (RESPD) has been produced by Slough Borough Council and forms part of the LDF, and principally supports the implementation of Core Strategy Policy 8 (Sustainability and the Environment). The RESPD was adopted in January 2010 (at the council's Planning Committee on 15 December 2009).
While the need for house extensions is accepted, large scale extensions can impact both on the street scene and on neighbouring occupiers. The guidelines therefore try and find a balance between allowing house owners to extend their properties with the longer term requirement to protect both the character and appearance of existing houses and their surroundings, and residential amenity for existing and future occupiers.
The revised Local Development Scheme for Slough (2009-2012) was approved by the Secretary of State in June 2009. This sets out:
