Staying on at school?

If you are a student aged 16 and starting further education, you may be entitled to the new Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). You can find more details about the EMA on the Directgov website.

Students who are attending school may also be entitled to additional financial support from the student support team.

1. Qualification requirements

To qualify for support you must meet the following requirements:

a) Residence requirements

You must have lived in the United Kingdom, for reasons other than education, for three years immediately before the start of the course; and
You must have lived in Slough for at least one year immediately before the start of the academic year (normally 1 September)

(If you are a refugee or if you have not been living in the United Kingdom because you or your parents have been temporarily employed abroad, you may still qualify. Please contact us for advice.)

b) Age requirements

You must be aged between 16 and 19 on the first day of the academic year in which the course starts
The first day of the academic year is defined as 1st September

c) Enrollment requirement

You must be enrolled on a full-time course at a maintained school within the United Kingdom

d) Income requirements

Your parents' gross income, after deductions for other dependent children, is less than £19,630. To calculate your parents contribution, we will look at your parents gross income from all sources

2. Closing dates for applications

Forms are available from the student support team
Applications are considered in order of receipt
Applications considered when funds have been exhausted, will normally be refused
If you do not apply until after the start of the course you will only be considered for assistance from the start of the following term

3. Appeals

If your application is refused because you do not meet one or more of the above conditions, you may appeal against the decision
Details of the appeal procedure will be sent to you in the event of a refusal
