Exemptions

There are certain classes of home which are exempt from council tax, they are:

1. Unoccupied and unfurnished dwellings which have been newly built, altered/repaired
2. Unoccupied dwellings which are owned by a charity
3. Unoccupied and unfurnished dwellings
4. Dwellings left unoccupied by deceased persons
5. Dwellings left unoccupied by prisoners
6. Dwellings left unoccupied by patients in hospitals/care homes
7. Unoccupied dwellings which are unfit for habitation
8. Unoccupied clergy dwellings
9. Dwellings left unoccupied by persons receiving care
10. Dwellings left unoccupied by persons providing care
11. Dwellings left unoccupied by students
12. Repossessed unoccupied dwellings
13. Halls of Residence
14. Dwellings occupied only by student(s)
15. Armed Forces barracks, messes and married quarters
16. Dwellings occupied by members of visiting forces 
17. Dwellings left unoccupied by a person declared bankrupt
18. Caravan pitches or boat moorings left empty
19. Dwellings solely occupied by persons under the age of 18
20. Unoccupied annexes
21. Dwellings solely occupied by Severally Mentally Impaired persons
22. Dwellings occupied by Diplomats
23. Annexes occupied by a relative who is either over 64, disabled or severally mentally impaired

If your dwelling meets any of the criteria and you believe that your property should be considered exempt from council tax please download the 'Council Tax: Application for Exemption' form and complete and return it to Council Tax Section PO Box 1733, Slough, SL1 1FS. Alternatively you can hand it in to the Customer Service Centre.
