Motor salvage operators

The Motor Salvage Operators Regulations 2002 provide effective regulation and policing of the motor salvage industry to combat unscrupulous traders disposing of stolen vehicles.

A person shall be carrying on business as a motor salvage operator if:

Wholly or partly in the recovery for re-use or sale of salvageable parts from motor vehicles and the subsequent sale or other disposal for scrap of the remainder of vehicles concerned
Wholly or mainly in the purchase of written off vehicles and their subsequent re-sale
Wholly or mainly in the sale or purchase of motor vehicles which are to be for (whether immediately or on a subsequent resale) of any of the activities mentioned or
Wholly or mainly in activities falling within paragraphs b and c

To register you will need to download, complete and return the 'Application to be Registered as a Motor Salvage Operator form' and the 'Application for Salvage Operators Registration (Police enquiry) form'. You will also need to enclose a registration fee of £120 with your application.

The registration is renewable every three years at a cost of £120.
