Age policy on private hire vehicles (mini-cabs) consultation

We want your views on the vehicle age policy on private hire vehicles (mini-cabs) in Slough.

The current vehicle age policy is:

• all new vehicles to be licensed for the first time are less than five (5) years of age
• all existing vehicles can be licensed up to nine (9) years of age and then must be replaced with a vehicle that is less than 9 years of age

There are various proposals with regards to the ages of vehicles, the two main options being:

• the policy to remain the same
• remove the age policy and so license any vehicle, any age as long as it passes Certificate of Compliance (similar to MOT) and any other relevant licensing conditions

Numerous factors need to be considered before a decision is taken, this includes:

• the image of the town – residents and visitors
• environmental concerns  – newer cars means lower emissions
• economic prosperity of the licensed drivers
