Traffic calming scheme for Northern Road and Cumberland Avenue
The transport section is reviewing the scheme implemented in March 2006 due to concerns on the chicanes on Northern Road and Cumberland Avenue. Ward councillors have met with officers to discuss the various options.
These options are:
- Speed cushions: this option is currently being used as part of the 20mph zone in Manor Park and is a good way of slowing vehicles whilst still allowing buses and emergency services an easy path
- Speed tables: this measure has also been used in the 20mph zone in Manor Park, it is a more effective way of slowing traffic than the speed cushions but needs to be designed to allow for buses and emergency services. For example, the tables would have to be a minimum of 12 metres in length and have a suitable gradient of 1 in 15 for the ramp. Standard speed tables are abour 3m wide with a gradient of 1 in 10
Safety/speed cameras and full width speed humps were proposed by councillors, but were withdrawn due to the following issues:
- It is not possible to install speed cameras, the Department for Transport (DfT) criteria states there should be three killed or seriously injured people in a three year period where speed was a contributing factor. The DfT have now devolved this responsibility to safety partnerships. Slough is a member of the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership and jointly the partnership has agreed to continue to use the DfT criteria. It is important to note that this particular stretch of road is 1.4 kilometres in length and speed cameras are only effective in small sections where the camera is located
- Speed humps were in place prior to the chicanes and is very effective for slowing general traffic. However, this does cause problems for emergency services such as ambulances and fire engines. As a result these measures are not recommended
Below is a plan which shows the approximate positions for these measures. There are three options:
- speed cushions
- speed tables
- a mixture of both cushions and tables
